Madagascar’s new president has signed legislation requiring a polygraph test as part of the selection process for ministerial positions.
According to Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the test will assist his administration in combating corruption and removing persons with malicious intent.
“We have decided to use a polygraph. It is with this polygraph that the background integrity checks will be carried out” he stated during a press briefing.
Colonel Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s president on October 17, 2025 following a coup d’état that deposed Andry Rajoelina.
The military leader is set to announce his new cabinet sometime this week. “We will know who is corrupt and who can help us, who is going to betray the youth struggle,” Colonel Randrianirina said.
Colonel Randrianirina removed the prime minister and disbanded his entire government on March 09, 2026. He amounced on Sunday, March 22, 2026, that anti-corruption chief, Mamitiana Rajaonarison will serve as new prime minister, and together, they will interview individuals who pass the lie detector test for cabinet positions.
The president went on to say that he recognises how difficult it is to find someone who is completely clean, and that 60% pass on the polygraph would be sufficient to admit a candidate as fit.
In September 2025 Malagasy youth protested under the banner ‘Gen Z Madagascar’, demanding a total overhaul of the administration and improved service delivery. According to UN reports, atleast 22 people died.
