President Paul Biya of Cameroon now 92 has announced his candidacy in the October 12 2025 election via popular social media platform X.
Biya’s announcement comes after several months of speculations and public declarations by top government officials and traditional leaders who have shown support for Biya to remain in power.
Biya who is currently the world’s oldest leader has been ruling Cameroon for the past 43 years. He assumed the presidency after Ahmadou Ahidjo’s resignation in 1982. Ahidjo was later accused of plotting a coup against Biya and was sentence to death in absentia.
With coalition banned in Cameroon and no eligible candidate from opposition parties, many citizens already see Biya as the winner of the upcoming elections.
Presidential mandate in Cameroon is 7 years which means that if Biya wins the election, he will be 106 years old by the time he finishes his next two terms.
