How to pitch your story

Please note that we do receive a lot of emails and not everyone will receive a response. You will only hear from us if we decide to commission or publish your article. Below are some tips on how to can make sure your pitch is successful.

  1. Make sure to send only one story idea at time for consideration.
  2. keep your pitch very short and simple. Introduce your unique element of the story so we can quickly respond if our interest is high.
  3. Tell us why the story needs to be published immediately. We need to see why it is a pressing issue.
  4. Give us a clear description of your pitch using precise words.
  5. Share your writing experience with us and tell us why you are the right person to write the article. Do not bother if you have no experience as we do take pieces from first-time writers as long as you can prove that you are the right person.
  6. Do not write the whole article and edit before sharing your idea. It is very important to work closely with our editor to determine the best focus and length of the article.

If your contribution is accepted, you will be told swiftly via email or a phone call.

If your story is commissioned but not published, you will still get paid the agreed fee as per discussion with the managing editor.

Upon agreement with our commissioning editor, you will be sent a confirmation email and contract to sign for copyrights.

Wordage: Critique Africa pays R0.50 per word for written articles. The fee can be negotiated based on the story.

We do not pay student journalists but can publish your article to help build your portfolio.

We do accept free contributions from student journalists and freelancers who are just passionate about writing and love to be read.

Facts are very important so when contacting us, please provide specifics such as name of organisation, address, names of persons involved and dates of events. Tell us what you know in detail, what you will like us to investigate and provide all evidence available.
