U.S District Judge Arun Subramanian has denied Hip Hop mogul, Sean ‘Diddy Combs’ bail stating that it is impossible to prove that he does not pose a danger to society and his accusers.
Diddy has been acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy but found guilt on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution of ex-girlfriends Casandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura and a woman named Jane. In the federal trial that lasted eight weeks with 34 witnesses, jury heard explicit testimonies accusing Diddy of drug-dazed “freak offs” and sexual abuse.
Diddy’s supporters who were waiting outside court to see him walk out were disappointed by the outcome of the final verdict regarding his immediate release after he returned to jail. The Judge made it clear that reason to deny bail is because Diddy has shown disregard for the rule of law and has a history of violence that can not not overlooked.
Diddy has consistently denied all allegations of non-consensual sex and racketeering scheme but admitted to domestic violence. According to Assistant U.S Attorney Maurene Comey, Diddy may still face up to 20 years in prison for transportation to engage in prostitution charges.
Diddy’s defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo and his legal team see the verdict as a great victory while Cassie’s lawyer Douglas H. Wigdor has applauded the judge, prosecutor and 12-member jury for their decision to keep the music producer behind bars.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Oct 03 2025.
Granting Diddy bail is not the kind a of message Manhattan federal court would have loved to send to the public considering the magnitude of the crimes he was found guilty of. Bail is not the type of judicial precedent the court can also pass as that can easily be taken advantage of by other perpetrators of sex related crimes.
The racketeering and sex-trafficking charges did not carry enough evidence for Diddy to be found guilty. Rico cases often involve several members of a criminal organisation and more so, with Diddy being the only accuser of the case, the jury could not find him guilty. None of those who testified against him were incriminated in any form. Phone calls, audio recordings and text messages from Cassie, Jane and all was used by Diddy’s defense to prove that the accusers were not coerced to take part in the ‘freak offs’ or perform sexual acts.
Violence on Cassie was used to conclude on Diddy’s bad character but it was irrelevant to the sex trafficking and abuse case as Cassie was already compensated in a civil lawsuit with the amount of $20m. The video released by CNN where Diddy was assaulting Cassie is also beyond the timeline which it can be used in a court of law as evidence. The video only shows violence and does not prove sex trafficking.
