Persistent heavy rainfall has wiped out 995 rice farms in Babura, local government area, Jigawa state in the northern region of Nigeria.
On Tuesday, 27 August 2025, Abdurahman Maikano, a spokesperson for the local communities warned on the occurrence of severe floods that could destroy farm lands and crops.
“This disaster has put many families at risk. We urgently appeal to the state government and relevant agencies to come to our aid and alleviate the hardship,” Maikano said while addressing the press.
The affected villages include Kwagga/Martini, Fadibara, Kuzunzumi, Jikan, Kanwa/Fulani, Dangaigai, Dankarda, Karfawa/Kanawa, Buruhum Gari, Sabuwar, Baka, Shashatu, Burukum Fulani, and Kurtulla.
According sources who spoke to Punch Nigeria today, 16 out of the 995 farms belonged to farmers in Kuzunzumi ward.
A delegation of government representatives and care givers have been sent to the region where they will meet the farmers and members of the local community to figure out a way forward.
