To him these are just Twitter trolls from his past, a time when he was just a socialite and moments when he had no regard for people’s feelings. This is the sentiment South African minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie wants the government, human rights activists and everyone concerned from around the world to approve regarding his use of racial slurs against black people.

McKenzie who is also president of Patriotic Alliance (PA) political party rose to prominence in 2023 after strongly campaigning for the mass deportation of undocumented foreigners in South African.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he promised his voters that he will personally go to hospitals to switch off oxygen supply from immigrants if ever there was not enough for South African citizens.

On several occasions, McKenzie has shown his hatred towards unregistered foreign nationals living in South Africa and he knows exactly how use their existence to please members of his party and the public who share a similar ideology that immigrants without identification from the Department of Home Affairs should not be welcomed to public sectors including labour market and hospitals.

Earlier this year, McKenzie told the South African parliament and healthcare sector to stop providing medical services to illegal aliens after PEPFAR (aid to combat HIV/AIDS) to South Africa was cut off by president Donald Trump’s administration. This instruction is currently being executed by members of March and March Movement and Operation Dudula who are barring immigrants from entering public hospitals for treatment.

Many South Africans have called on McKenzie to take accountability for calling black women apes over a decade ago, viewing black people as lazy, belittling black degree holders, raping women and using the word “Kaffir” (cockroach or Nigga) when referring to black people.

McKenzie’s political career has been surrounded by many controversies. In 2024, he told the media he would withdraw South Africa’s genocide case against Israel. In a video circulating on social media, he can be heard admitting to raping women after subduing them by use of alcohol.

While South African citizens are calling on McKenzie to leave office, some alike have shown him support. A video has surfaced of Renaldo Gouws, saying that he does not believe McKenzie should be cancelled but the however, the law should be implemented. Gouws is a former Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentarian who was fired in 2024 by his party for saying “Kill all the kaffirs” in a 2010 video.

McKenzie has refused to abdicate or apologise for his appalling behaviour and character over this issue. According to him, only the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has the power to ask him to do so. The president has not responded.
