Liberia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has announced plans to commence the construction of its second subsea cable line that will serve four other neighbouring countries.
The project is a collaboration between the government of Liberia, World Bank and ECOWAS Commission for Infrastructure and Digitisation. The subsea cable line is the second and largest so far in the African continent. It will connect Liberia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
If this initiative is successful, it will greatly improve internet access in these countries that have only one international subsea connection via Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable.
Telecoms consulting firm TACTIS was appointed by ECOWAS Commission’s Project Preparation and Unit (PPDU) to carry out a feasibility test which was completed on July 12 2025 with positive results.
Recently, Liberia has been highly involved in pipeline and infrastructural projects geared at enhancing energy security, promotion of economic development, and improving connectivity within ECOWAS region.
Other projects include Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project. This pipeline aims to connect Nigeria’s gas reserves to Morocco and potentially extend to Europe, passing through several ECOWAS countries and Liberia. A third initiative currently going on is the West African Power Pool (WAPP) electricity integration which will ensure stable and affordable electricity for all ECOWAS member states.
