Government of Rwanda has said it is willing to accept 250 migrants from the United States of America (USA) in new deal with Trump’s administration.
The deportees from different countries will be sheltered, equipped with workforce training, and provided with healthcare during their stay in Rwand.
After a certain period, those wish to remain in the country may do so with government’s approval.
Since Trump came back to office, he has been determined to remove illegal immigrants that were allowed into the country during former president Joe Biden’s administration. Deporting undocumented migrants was Trump’s major campaign promise which he must fulfil by all means to maintain voters’ trust.
As part of the deal between both governments, Rwanda will be receiving an undisclosed amount of grant from USA to cater for the asylum seekers.
Ms. Yolande Makolo, Spokesperson for government says because Rwanda’s values after genocide were founded on reintegration and rehabilitation, it is only fair that those who experience extreme hardship and displacement are given a chance to start all over.
This is the second time Rwanda agrees to take in migrants from another country. The first deal with UK’s conversative government in 2022 fell apart when Labour Party took over office in July 2024.
