
ADDIS ABABA
African Union (AU) calls on United Nations, World Bank, governments, and other international organisations to seize use of 16th century world map designed by cartographer Gerardus Mercator. AU is backing a campaign by advocacy groups, Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa pointing out that the current map makes Africa looks smaller, even though it is the second-largest continent in size, with over one billion in population and 55 countries.
SOUTH AFRICA
Rogue members of South African Taxi Council (SANTACO) stormed first black owned mall (Maponya Mall) in Soweto, Gauteng province on August 14 2025 to disrupt business activities of E-Hailing drivers. A vehicle was torched and a 27-year old occupant was killed. A passerby and another driver suffered from gunshot wounds. Members of SANTACO have also warned South Africans to only have one passenger at a time or risk loosing their vehicle.
Visit of Army Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya to Iran and his pledge of military support to Iranian government has been condemned by president Cyril Ramaphosa. Democratic Alliance (DA) party wants him court-martialed for breeching military neutrality. South African government officials have distanced themselves from Maphwanya’s trip to Iran. If found guilty of recklessness, he will be dismissed from the force as deserved punishment.
AlGERIA
A deadly bus accident has left 18 people dead and 24 others injured. The accident happened after a bus veered off a bridge in the capital city, Algiers and plunged into Qued EL Harrach stream at around 5pm on Friday 15th August 2025. 16 divers and 25 ambulances were deployed to the scene.
MALI
Suspected French spy, Yann Vezilier and accomplices, Mali’s Security Minister General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, General Abass Dembele and 55 other soldiers have been arrested on accusations of conspiring with president Emmanuel Macron’s regime to overthrow president General Asimi Goita.
SUDAN
Human Rights group, Emergency Lawyers Group reports that Sudanese army continues capture, torture, and killing of citizens since recapturing the capital city Khartoum from Rapid Support (RSF) in March this year.
CAMEROON
Nigeria’s Consul General to the North West and South West Regions Taofik Obasanjo Coker has passed on. He died yesterday, 16th August 2025 in Buea after an undisclosed illness. Coker took over the Diplomatic mission from Lawal Bappah in May 2024.
ZAMBIA
Zambian citizens celebrate as corpse of late president Dr. Edgar Lungu will be repatriated after a ruling by the Pretoria High Court, South Africa. He will be giving a befitting state burial at Embassy Park Presidential burial site.
