Youngest son of late Robert Mugabe arrested for shooting a gardener

The Mugabes are in the news again for all the wrong reasons.

Members of South African Police Service (SAPS) have taken into the custody Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 29, after shooting a security gaurd at the property where he lives in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. 

The 29-year old man identified as Sipho Mahlangu was shoot twice in the the back. Circumstances for the attack and use of deadly force is still unknown.

Chatunga is the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s former president, Robert Gabriel Mugabe who died on September 06, 2019 while receiving treatment in Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.

SAPS confirms that the 23-year man who was shot by Chatunga is an employee at the residence of where Chatnuga lives and a case of attempted murder is being investigated.

Chatagunga was arrested alongside his cousin Tobias Matonhodze and it is not yet clear who fired the shots that injured the victim.

Police are still searching for the firearm but confirm a bullet has been found. 

The victim who is in a critical condition has been taken to the hospital.

In October 2025, Chatunga’s elder brother Robert Mugabe Junior was arrested in Zimbabwe for possession of weed and breaking traffic law.
