Through tragedy and her mother’s yearning for extravagance, a young maiden finds true love in a wealthy businessman.
Written by Chioma Akpan and directed by Ben Cassie, Mother’s Bargain tells the tale of a woman who, in order to live a life of luxury, uses her only daughter as a bait for rich men.
A wealthy man named Chief Coker (Emeka Ike) approaches Adaora (played by Chinenye Nnebe) and offers her a better life. When Adaora’s mother, portrayed by Charity Onah, realises this fantastic opportunity, Adaora’s boyfriend, who has been helping the family through tough times, is sidelined.
The film, which focuses on individualism, depicts the choices and errors people make in today’s Nigerian society while they are struggling financially. It also portrays an African custom and culture in which young girls are groomed to marry older men they don’t love in the hopes that they will eventually fall in love.
Adaora first rejects Chief Coker’s proposal, but she later agrees after her mother persists in persuading her and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) detains her boyfriend for fraud.
Adaora chooses to file for divorce after losing her mother to a heart attack. Chief Coker offers her ₦100 million, but she declines. After giving it some thought, Adaora returns to Chief Coker and acknowledges him as a loving and devoted husband.
