Typically, some members of the public assume that journalists are required to report on every story. Yes, it is true, but ethical journalism requires reliable and balanced reporting.

While professional journalists balance facts in the process of informing the public, activists on the other hand fight for change of laws and government policies that are not favourable to society and all within.

For decades, mainly corrupt politicians, repressive governments and rogue law enforcement officials have been held responsible for interfering with press freedom. Members of the general public are not left out because sometimes, people mount pressure on journalists to report on issues without enough time for investigations.

Mounting pressure on the press also takes away from a journalist’s ability to report impartially. However this is not an excuse why a reporter should not remain professional.

Journalists who have become emotionally compromised through their involvement in political party activities, corporate or non-profit organisations should leave the news room. Such a reporter must consider a career transition and not continue to publish under the same tittle.

For concerned members of the public to continue trusting the news, professional journalists must never give in to demands from members of the society who want information framed for propaganda purpose.

To be the voice of the voiceless, a journalist can not only write about a sensationalised portion of information.
